While growing up my parents would always tell me that its a dog-eat-dog world. Their favourite line was "God takes care of those who take care of themselves". My family isn't religious but none of us deny the existence of something higher than us.
Anyway, as I've been growing up that has become more and more evident. For the most part nobody gives a damn, about anybody else. Sure people may smile at you on the street but when it comes down to it, it is every man/woman for themselves.
Is that a bad thing? Well not exactly, but the problem is that that kind of attitude transfers to places like the hospitals. I think that is totally unacceptable. A friend of mine has gotten ill, with a strange persisting headache (its been like over a week now), and fever. One day she was at the hospital wanting to get a diagnosis. It took her 9 hours to be admitted and while she was waiting she recounted to me the absolutely horrible and unacceptable treatment of the ones in need.
My dad encountered first hand the kind of negligence doctors these days are capable of. Thankfully my dad survived his ordeal and we did not press charges, but in all honesty we should have.
The thing that irks me the most though, is that people are too ignorant. They think their doctor has their best interest in mind. While that is true for a handful of doctors, there a lot of those who simply want to swipe you card, give you some drug and send you on your way.
That is why it is so extremely important to take care of yourself. You're not doing it for anybody else but yourself. It pisses me off to no end when people ignore their problems, thinking they will go away. Yes ignorance is bliss but that is no way to live. You want to live past 60? Good get your life together. Don't make stupid "New Year" resolutions, actually DO SOMETHING. Educate yourself, listen to yourself, take care of yourself.
As our civilization progresses health concerns seem to be going through the roof. Cancer, heart attack, viruses, infections, are everywhere. Don't become germophobic but become aware and make your health a priority above ALL else. Without health we cannot be happy, successful, competent. Health is one of those things you will dearly miss if it slips away.
Your job can wait, your boss will understand, nothing is as important as your health and the health of your loved ones. It should be our priority to survive not to let chance decided whether we are fit enough to make it.
As depressing as it may sound, nobody cares about you as an individual (except obviously your family), so take care of yourself because no-one else will.
